What is ACE2?
Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is an essential regulator of heart function expressed in the heart, lung, kidney, and gastrointestinal tract. In addition, ACE2 is a functional receptor that acts as an entry point into human lung cells for coronaviruses such as SARS and novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Research in SARS-COV-2 and ACE2 interaction is a topic of interest since it plays a key role in both cross-species and human-to-human transmissions of SARS-CoV-2.
SARS-CoV Antibodies
ACE2 interacts with the spike protein (S) of SARS-COV-2 as confirmed by structural analysis of SARS-COV-2. The SARS-COV-2 spike protein receptor-binding domain structure is similar to the SARS spike protein suggesting a similar function. In a study on SARS-CoV, the virus infection occurred in well-differentiated ciliated epithelial cells expressing ACE2 thus the virus enters hosts through the mucosa of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract.
