Researchers have found that a drug which inhibits IDO can increase the effectiveness of cancer immunotherapy. Epacadostat, which is an IDO inhibitor, successfully increased the remission of cancer in patients concurrently using anti-PD-1 immunotherapies. The molecular mechanisms of how the IDO inhibitors are interacting with the immune system are still unknown, but the implications are truly fascinating. IPSC Hematopoietic Stem Cells

Induced Pluripotent Blood Stem Cells Generated In Vitro

Finally, scientists have created induced pluripotent stem cells (IPSCs) that mimic hematopoietic stem cells. These were created by converting skin cells to IPSCs, then inserting several transcription factors into the genome to induce the proper differentiation. These cells were used for a bone marrow transplant in mice, which successfully generated whole blood, including immune cells. The mice who received bone marrow transplants with the hematopoietic IPSCs survived, and lived over 1.5 years. Further characterization is needed, but the results are very promising.

Due to a recurrence of Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the latest experimental vaccine will be implemented to anyone who is at risk of being infected. This vaccine, developed by Merck, was designed to target a surface protein of the Zaire strain of Ebola. The operation will be extensive, moving laboratory equipment and freezers into the populated areas of the DRC, where there are very few paved roads.
