ReproducibiligyMitigating the Reproducibility Crisis in Cancer Drug Research

Reproducibility has been highlighted as one of the main problems when validating cancer research. Scientists with the The Reproducibility Project have opted to begin pragmatically reviewing the reproducibility of the research released by a host of labs where the publications may have been subject to some bias. This project, unlike earlier efforts to validate cancer biology research, promises to make all its findings open. As of January 19, five fully analyzed efforts have been published.

In the wake of the instability and controversy that accompanied the epidemic crises of the last decade, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) has opted to make a move against viral complacency. The idea is to shift the cost of manufacturing preventative vaccines against epidemic threats to governments, since private companies do not have the resources to do so. The onus of protecting the people lies on our governments for many other critical tasks; law-enforcement, international conflict, and natural disasters have all been handled. The move to include protection from epidemics represents much needed progress. Read about it in Nature.

For innate immunity to be successful, leukocytes must be transported through blood vessels to the site of infection and translocated from the blood to the tissue. This paper published in Cell explains a new mechanism proposed for how these cells cross the vascular endothelium. When leukocytes insert themselves between endothelial cells, their nuclei are likely responsible for disassembling actin filaments between endothelial stress fibers, allowing the endothelium to bend and allow access to the migrating cells.
