What is ACE2 receptor?

Angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is an essential regulator of heart function expressed in the heart, lung, kidney and gastrointestinal tract. In addition, ACE2 is a functional receptor that acts as an entry point into human lung cells for coronaviruses such as SARS and novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (2019-nCoV). Research in SARS-COV-2 and ACE2 interaction is a topic of interest since it plays a key role to both cross-species and human to human transmissions of SARS-CoV-2.[i].

ProSci ACE2 Receptor binding COVID-19

ACE2 receptors interacts with the spike protein (s) of SARS-COV-2 as confirmed by structural analysis of SARS-COV-2 . The SARS-COV-2  spike protein receptor-binding domain structure is similar to the SARS spike protein[ii] suggesting similar function. In a study on SARS-CoV, the virus infection occurred in well differentiated cilated epithelial cells expressing ACE2 thus the virus enters hosts through the mucosa of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract.[iii]
