Obesity Antibodies

Obesity is a condition where fatty tissue is increased to a point where it is a risk factor for certain health conditions or increased mortality. It is a growing health problem, affecting over 30% of United States adults, and 16% of children and adolescents. It is the second leading cause of preventable death after smoking. For these reasons, it has been an area of intense investigation.

Adipokines are a group of cytokines secreted by adipose tissue which include leptin, adiponectin, resistin, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and a group of C1q/tumor necrosis factor α related proteins (CTRP). Leptin is a protein hormone which is involved in regulation of appetite and metabolism. Adiponectin is another protein hormone which is involved with modulation of glucose regulation and fatty acid catabolism. Adiponectin levels are inversely coorelated with body mass index (BMI).
